Today we are going to look at a probability again. Probability is the chance of something happening. We can describe probability using words like certain, likely, unlikely and impossible. We can also use numbers to describe probability. If I put 3 marbles in a bag and 1 of the 3 is blue, I then have a 1 out of 3 chance of pulling out a blue marble (without looking). It is a 1 out of 3 chance because 1 of the 3 marbles is blue. Today we are going to use the example of flipping a coin. A coin has 2 sides and 1 of the sides is heads. So what are the chances of flipping a coin and getting heads? What are the chances of flipping tails?
Today we are going to do an experiment. To do it, you will need a coin, a pen or pencil, and a piece of paper. Well, I guess you will need a ruler too if you want to be neat! Set up a chart to record your results. When you are done, write about your experiment. Tell me about the process, your predictions, the results and why you think you got the results you did. Here's what to do...
1. Create a chart to record your predictions and the number of heads and tails you get. (see below)
2. Make your predictions.
3. Start flipping the coin and recording your results.
4. Do the writing.
Here's an example of a chart.
